Calendar of Events for 2014

The Gardeners' Forum working party have organised a varied calendar of events for 2014.

We begin with the popular supper at the Forman Hall on the 1st March which, as it is to be held on St David's Day, will have a Welsh theme.  This will be followed by a visit to Border Organic Gardeners' Potato Day at the Kelso Showground on Sunday 2nd March followed by a pub lunch.

On the 24th May we shall hold our Safari Supper with visits to three member's homes.  This is a very popular event and is usually blessed by good weather.

Following the Harvest Festival at the Kirk on Sunday 5th October we shall hold the Harvest Supper in the Forman Hall which is open to all.

On Saturday 13th December the annual Christmas drinks party will be held at Girnwood.

Bridge Closure

Martins Bridge will once again be closed.  On this occasion it is for one day only: Monday 4th November.  The diversions for the day are as before, light traffic via the park road with all others diverted via Tushielaw to Selkirk.

Newsletter Celebration

Eagle eyed readers will have noticed that the issues of the Newsletter are climbing surely and steadily to the 100th issue which will be published in February 2014.  We have decided that this milestone is worthy of celebration and we are organising a supper and entertainment in the Forman Hall on Saturday 15th February at 7.00 p.m. Tickets will cost £6 each and you should bring your own drink, although there will be a glass of bubbly on arrival.  We shall also be mounting a small exhibition of some of the past articles from the Newsletter.  To book your tickets please contact Jennifer on 880276 or Judith on 880653.

Please come along and help us celebrate what began during a time of adversity in 2000, but has now become (we hope) a valuable part of valley life.

Notification of Sunday Works at Langhope Rig Wind Farm

Gael Force Renewables are the Principal Contractor currently carrying out construction works to prepare for the construction of the Langhope Rig Wind Farm located within Ettrick Forrest, on behalf of SSE Renewables. 

We are notifing you that from time to time it may be necessary to carry out work on Sundays throughout the Langhope Project .  Any works required to take place on a Sunday will be located within the forest area, circa 5 miles from the entrance to the site off the B711 at Almoor Reservoir, and therefore the works will not enfringe on your privacy or cause disruption.

We will be running a mini-bus from Hawick which will take operatives to and from the site this will will limit the traffic movements on the B711 during the day.  

Barrel Law Update

The site visit scheduled for late October had to be postponed because of the road works on the B711 but will now take place on Wednesday 6th November.  We must hope for as clear a day as the Planning Committee had for their visit in March but hopefully the impact from the cairn and from Easter Alemoor will be clear whatever the weather.

As well as the Reporter people from ABO and SBC will be attending. Robert Francombe and John Godfrey will be there on behalf of local people and ABO will be delighted to meet me again.

We shall do all we can to make the impact clear without  making comments on windfarms in general which are not allowed.

Community Broadband

The Board held a further meeting with a member of the Community Broadband Team.  The situation regarding fibre optic connection is still not clear and more information should be available shortly, but the position appears promising. The CDT will continue to monitor the position.

Work on the valley website is continuing and we hope to be able to launch shortly.  Please see details of the photographic competition below.  The Board is investigating the possibility of holding First Aid classes in the Forman Hall.  Further information will be available soon.

Mobile Library visit to Forman Hall

The Mobile Library has agreed to make an extra stop during its round of the Borthwick Water. Please see the diary dates for dates of visits.  The next planned visit is Tuesday 25th February between 10:00 and 11:00 am.  The librarian is excellent and can sign folk up on the day!  He will also try to access requested books from other libraries in the region.

We would be pleased if folk could drop by - I’ll put the kettle for a chat and a cuppa.
